General FAQ

What do I find on this page?

Streaming radio channels using mp3 and windows media formats, 24/7, completely free! No commercials for the most part at this time.

What channels are currently offered?

Fourteen channels: Trance, Vocal Trance, Chillout, Deep House, Euro Dance, Hard Dance, Progressive, Goa-Psy Trance, Hard Core, DJ-Mixes, Lounge, Ambient, Drum 'n' Bass, Classic Electronica, Breaks, Gabber and Premium Replay.
DI's sister station SKY.fm features eleven non-electronica stations.

How can I listen?

Please see this page for help on tuning in.

What does "DI Radio" stand for?

DI, DI.fm, or DI Radio stand for Digitally Imported Radio. The meaning of this is for you to interpret :)

How can I find out more about this station besides this FAQ page?

There is an About page, and also the Timeline page. In addition there's a Forums Board to read on many things discussed by regular listeners in the past, and a Chat room if you are bored.

Who runs this page, and how can I contact you?

There are many volunteers on our DI Crew, but Ari Shohat is the President and manager of Digitally Imported, Inc., while Entranced is the Vice President. See our Contact page if you need to get in touch.

Is Digtally Imported Radio legal?

Yes, we are a corporate entity called Digitally Imported, Inc. - incorporated in the US in the state of New York. We pay royalties for the use of music to the required organizations under US laws.

Can I download mp3s or mixes you play from you?

No, there is no material offered for downloading because we have a license to webcast only. To offer downloads we would have to get permission or an agreement with the label or artist representing a specific track.

However we did team up with Trackitdown who does that sort of stuff, and many tracks can be bought through download.di.fm, our new download store.

Where can I buy the songs or mixes that you play?

You will have to do some of your own research - electronica is not easy to find. Try sites such as Amazon.com and EuromusicWorld.com, searches to these two are dynamic from our Recent Playlist pages. Otherwise we recommend Google search engine.

Most of the mixes that we air are not available for sale, they are for promo use only. Best we can tell you is to get in touch with the DJ who mixed the set.

Do you have any mailing lists?

Yes, check out a bunch of them over here: Mailing Lists

Do you make any money in this business?

While we are a for profit organization, at present we do not have enough to pay for our expenses and employment. In fact nearly all employment help is therefore on a volunteer basis. As we are currently sustained by generous donations, please consider donating here.

I love DI, how can I support you?

Please tell all your friends about us, and consider donating here because even a few dollars help us to continue working.

I am a DJ or an artist, wishing to submit material for air time consideration. How do I do that?

Please see this link.

Can I book your DJs?

Possibly. Please contact us and we will try and forward your request to the needed person.

I make my own music or mix sets, can I offer any to DI for airtime?

This is very competetive, and we only try to pick the best and what we need. Therefore you have to go through this Submissions page, it tells you what to do next. If you know you have mistakes in your mix sets, please spare us the time and don't submit anything.

I am a DJ playing your kind of music, can I spin live on DI?

You too would have to go through our Submissions process. Generally we require that at least one mix of yours is played on the air for a little while, to see how people react to it.

I got more questions for this FAQ, will you add them here?

Probably, send it in a short email to Ari (ariNO_SPAM@digitallyimported.com, remove the "NO_SPAM" first) and he probably will add it here.

Technical Faq

Is it possible to record DI Radio digitally?

Yes, software exists for this, but we are legally supposed to discourage such conversations. Please do not bring up this question in our Forums or Chat room, you will get the same answer.

What streaming technology does DI use?

DI uses Nullsoft's SHOUTcast technology for streaming in mp3 format.
We also use Microsoft's Windows Media format as an alternative. We probably will Never be interested in Real Audio!

If you need help tuning in, please see this page.

What hardware/OS is used on your machines?

It is our policy at Digitally Imported not to disclose this information in detail. The most we can say is that we are using dual processor rack-mountable servers for encoding applications.

We are using all kinds of operating systems: Win2K, FreeBSD, Sun OS, Linux.

Where do you get your crazy bandwidth?

Our bandwidth is donated by companies and fans. For a list of some of our sponsors see the Gold Sponsors page.

I have a few questions for starting my own radio station, can I ask you something?

We hardly have time for our own features, please don't ask us for free help.

Can I relay your server for a private network?

You can contact us about it, but all relays for private networks are done for $5/month per channel for administrative and bandwidth charges.

I am behind a firewall, what can I do to be able to listen???

Many of our public free mp3 streams (non Premium) are running on port 80. If you experience skips even on those, try using the same servers on port 5190. This solution works mostly for people with webcache systems. They also happen to be usually outside United States.

The other alternative is to use our Windows Media streams, they often work when MP3 streams do not.

Yet another alternative is to check out our Premium service, which offers streams on multiple ports for each channel.

I got more questions for this FAQ, will you add them here?

Probably, please contact us if you'd like to suggest some.
